History: The area which is
Rancho Santa Fe now was once developed to grow eucalyptus trees for
railroad ties. This was around 1906. Later, the wood was found to be
unsuitable for the railroad ties and the project was stopped. The
trees continued to grow and flourish. Many of the trees are still
standing today amongst citrus groves and hills.
In 1989, Rancho Santa Fe was designated as
a State Historical Landmark by the state government. The Rancho
Santa Fe Covenant was one of the first planned communities in
the state of California.
